A FRAMEWORK FOR UNDERSTANDING DISRUPTION

Business transformation is the trending term as companies are constantly adapting in an era of disruption. Business leaders have shifted their attention to disruptive technologies and innovations in an effort to craft strategies and business models that respond to markets where the only certainty is change. Similarly, businesses are compelled to further re-invent themselves to navigate the disruption generated by a divisive political climate and societal transformation.

Fredrik Hansson, Partner, McKinsey

MITIGATING RISK AND PROTECTING assets AND operations

Security challenges can come from aggressive competitors, disgruntled employees, or world events. Executives around the world are under pressure to find innovative security solutions to ensure business continuity at a justifiable cost of a hypothetical event. The security industry is making strides to anticipate and manage risk. AI and data processing can generate protective intelligence to build scalable solutions to common security challenges, from employment screening and to executive protection. In this panel, security expertise meets smart technology to assess risks to organizations and ways to mitigate them.

How drained is the swamp?

Many a politician has vowed to “drain the swamp”, from President Ronald Reagan to Nancy Pelosi in 2006 when announcing her political strategy after a decade of Republican rule. Shortly before his election, President Donald Trump pledged to “drain the swamp”, rid Washington of political insiders out of touch with ordinary Americans. Days after taking office, he signed an executive order limiting when and under what conditions political appointees can lobby federal agencies and the White House. Meet K Street to get the skinny on lobbying in the Trump era.

Craig Saperstein, Partner, Pillsbury

Duane Gibson, Partner, The Livingston Group

Sustainable Buildings - Tomorrow's skyline

The necessity and demand for environmentally responsible buildings have changed the design, construction and operation of public spaces and offices and how we live. Cities are increasingly adopting carbon targets and requiring commercial building owners to disclose green building performance to tenants, buyers, and, in some cases, the public. Building owners are set to manage larger buildings remotely with third-party service companies and software to detect system failures and manage energy consumption, all by drawing on the cloud and using a phone. Meanwhile demand in the existing building market is increasing as energy-efficiency retrofits are becoming available. This panel will explore what shapes tomorrow’s skyline, from technology to market.

Tomas Kvistmo, Chairman IMEK

MEET THE NEW GLOBAL FINANCIAL SYSTEM

Financial services have been enriched by recent years’ blockchains and cryptocurrencies that can potentially address some of the problems of access to finance. Existing blockchains and cryptocurrencies have nevertheless proven volatile and hard to scale, which have made them poor options for exchange and storage of value. Learn how market actors combine know-how and resources to form a decentralized blockchain and a low-volatility cryptocurrency set to deliver a lower-cost, more accessible and more connected global financial system that unlocks opportunities for all, from the mom-and-pop store to production facilities via the unicorn.

consequences of U.S. trade policy

As the Trump administration is pushing Congress for swift approval of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the U.S. and China are imposing billions of dollars-worth on one another’s goods in a row over unfair trading practices. Meanwhile, the U.S. and EU are reeling in the effects of tariffs on European steel and aluminum and reciprocal measures on U.S. products and duking it out over illegal subsidies in the aviation industry. The administration is also considering imposing tariffs on cars and car parts deeming such imports a threat to national security. In fact, experts believe a wider spat with Europe would be much more damaging than the current tit-for-tat with China. Hear first-hand from a panel that explores the impact on business and investment, workers and consumers when trade is not flowing.

Björn Arvidsson, Head of Trade and Economic Affairs, Embassy of Sweden to the US

Nancy Fischer, Partner, Pillsbury

Wow no COw!

Climate change, animal welfare, and greater interest in personal health and wellness are driving popularity in plant-based food. Oatmilk is fast becoming the preferred alternative in trendy coffee shops. The brand responsible for the golden age of oats is Swedish Oatly who has been making oatmilk for more than 30 years. The brand successfully launched in the US in late 2016 and in only two short years, the demand for oatmilk was so high that there were reports of nationwide ‘oatmilk shortages’. Hear Sara Fletcher talk about the successes (and some accompanying failures) of bringing Oatly to the US.

Sara Fletcher, Communications and Public Affairs Lead , Oatly

4:30 PM

Debate 2020 election: WHERE PUNDITS AGREE AND DISAGREE

In a crowded field of presidential hopefuls Democratic contenders are on a collision course and moderates argue they too can beat President Trump. Whistle-blowers and Congressional inquiries provide fodder for federal prosecutors to unseal charges against the President’s allies. Meanwhile a majority of U.S. business leaders believe, at least for now, that President Trump will win reelection.

Hear well-known expert political pundits’ commentary and opinion on the polls and fiery campaigns. Who and what are the influential forces? The panel will also offer their best bet on Democratic nominee and President-elect and how this might affect the economy and the average American.
